Thompson Temple began with a vision. While laboring in evangelism in Dallas, Elder Joseph Anthony Thompson saw a shotgun house on a corner in Gretna, and the Lord told him to leave Dallas, find that corner, and pitch a tent. In obedience, he and his wife Missionary Carrie Brown-Thompson did just that. Under that tent, with Missionary Thompson singing and Elder Thompson preaching the Word, Thompson Temple was born.

When the tent went up in flames, God had already made provision: that very same day Bishop Thompson had purchased a building for a more permanent home, and Weyer Street Church of God in Christ was founded. There the congregation grew, felt led to adopt the name Thompson Temple Church of God in Christ, and established every department and auxiliary under Missionary Thompson's leadership.

From Weyer Street to Cook Street, and finally to our present home on Whitney Avenue, Thompson Temple has stood for over seven decades as a beacon of worship, outreach, and community. In 1987, Bishop Thompson established the Louisiana East Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. Today, under the leadership of Supt. Keith E. Thornton, Sr., the church continues to grow, a living testimony to the faithfulness of God.
